Individual therapy and assessment for individuals who wish to address their mental health – and improve the quality of their lives.
I provide individual psychological therapy to individuals who wish to address their mental health symptoms and improve the quality of their lives. I work from a cognitive and behavioural perspective, which means that I work with individuals to help them understand and change unhelpful thinking patterns and entrenched cycles of behaviour. I offer fairly structured treatment, and am very transparent in my approach – I help individuals understand the rationale behind the different aspects of their treatment.
Hi, my name is Dr Rebecca Chau. I am a clinical psychologist based in Perth, Western Australia. I provide assessment and treatment for adults who wish to improve their mental health – and the quality of their lives.
I am a cognitive and behavioural therapist, and I offer Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Schema Therapy, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). These therapies are for a wide range of symptoms and difficulties, including depression, anxiety, insomnia, relationship problems, eating disorders, as well as difficulties regulating emotions (i.e., with Borderline Personality Disorder, or Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder).
Following assessment, I work collaboratively with individuals to figure out which treatment fits best. Please note that I do not currently see couples or individuals under the age of 18.
A widely used evidence-based treatment where individuals learn foundational skills and strategies to gain immediate relief from current symptoms such as anxiety and low mood, and break cycles such as avoidance or withdrawal. I believe CBT skills are useful for everyone, and these are often offered as a first stage of treatment.
Another widely used cognitive therapy where individuals not only learn skills and strategies for symptoms improvement but develop a deeper understanding about previous experiences, especially childhood relationships and events. These early experiences may have contributed to current ways of seeing the world – as well as mental health symptoms. Schema Therapy is also used as a longer-term treatment for personality disorders.
Incorporates cognitive and behavioural strategies with Eastern philosophies to focus on improving emotion regulation and reducing self-harmful behaviours. Individuals who benefit from DBT may have problems controlling their impulses and emotions, and may have symptoms consistent with Borderline Personality Disorder. DBT is typically a longer-term therapy and may be used in conjunction with Schema Therapy if appropriate.
The gold standard evidence-based treatment for eating disorders. Research shows that this practical, accessible treatment has good outcomes. It incorporates cognitive techniques, such as observing negative thoughts about eating, with behavioural techniques such as developing regular eating patterns. I offer CBT-E for Binge Eating Disorder.
As clinically appropriate, I offer diagnostic assessment for neurodivergence, psychological disorders and personality disorders. This includes diagnostic assessment for Autism and ADHD (adults only). Sometimes individuals seek clarification on existing symptoms or diagnosis, while others seek a diagnosis to clarify their direction in treatment. Diagnoses may be made in conjunction with a psychiatrist, and written reports are provided as well.
